Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.
Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the ability to question certain decisions made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step follows just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, such as:
- Whether a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at all of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
Another change at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
