Tropical Storm Melissa is projected to escalate to a uncommon Category 5 hurricane as it shifts in the direction of Jamaica, delivering dangerous rapid inundation and landslides.

This weather system, which recorded winds of up to 195 km/h as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is currently turning northwest in the Caribbean region and is anticipated to make landfall by Tuesday, based on data from weather experts.

Alerts of power cuts and disruption to utilities have been announced as this storm produces up to 76cm of rainfall and sea level surges as high as thirteen feet above typical tides. "Find safe refuge immediately," residents have been told.

Melissa is the 13th named cyclone in the ongoing Atlantic hurricane season, which normally finishes in November.

Most Intense Hurricane Risk

A category five hurricane is the most intense classification, with winds of at least 252 km/h.

While this storm is projected to reduce in intensity to a Category 4 hurricane before reaching Jamaica, experts said there was "very little practical difference in the total effects" upon making contact with land, and that the cyclone will be "at least that intensity" when it hits the island.

The country's head of government the official commented: "I realize that there are many Jamaicans who are concerned, who are deeply troubled, and with good reason: worry is natural.

"Yet the best way to address anxiety and any nervousness and concern is to stay ready."

Locals are being instructed to secure their homes with protective bags and wooden boards, and to stock up on essentials.

Alerts are also active for areas in the neighboring country such as the main city, Port au Prince, the adjacent nation and eastern Cuba, where this storm is anticipated to bring similar effects by the middle portion of the coming week.

Landslides presently generated by the storm have resulted in two fatalities in the country, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.

Future Trajectory

The hurricane is forecast to move across the island nation by midweek before traveling via the Antillas Mayores and emerging into the open ocean.

By the time it makes contact with Cuba, it is anticipated to have weakened to a Category 3 storm.
